Every daydream/book needs a song, right? Here’s my suggestion for one of my chapters. I think of someone like Alanis Morissette singing it. Excerpt from the book.
EVIDENCE
You can’t hurt me
I don’t feel anything at all
Blood and death surrounds me.
The police cars,
The evidence tape,
The blood, the photographs, the fingerprints.
The years and hours at work
Working crime scenes
Taught me to not feel.
You can’t hurt me
I don’t feel anything at all
Red and blue lights
Dance in the streets,
Circling over my head
And in my dreams.
Now I’m cold and mean and strong.
Your words can’t touch me.
Your touch can’t burn me.
You can’t hurt me
I don’t feel anything at all.
I watched the two of you drive by the crime scene.
The blue and red lights
Illuminated your faces,
Laughing, hugging, kissing.
In my heart I wrapped evidence tape around you both.
Took a photo in my mind.
Evidence of a crime scene,
Evidence of your cheating heart.
You can’t hurt me
I don’t feel anything at all.
You are just another crime scene
Two criminals in chains
To be categorized, numbered
And stored away in a box.
The verdict guilty as charged.
Now you can’t hurt me
I don’t feel anything at all.
You can’t hurt me.
But you did.
